Mohenjo Daro is Pre-Historic Drama set in the northwest province of ancient India, in 2200 BC, when the evil greed of a man is about to destroy the oldest city in the ancient world, Mohenjo Daro. A young indigo farmer, Sarman, leaves his small obscure village for the first time to sell his wares in the famous bazaars of the great city of Mohenjo Daro, instead of his sick uncle.

The city overwhelms him with its sheer size and grandness, but he soon realizes that it’s an illusion. The city has been used and abused by its tyrant Chief of Senate, Maham for his own ambitions and rivalries. A chance meeting with the high priest reveals secrets that should have stayed buried forever. Secrets about Sarman’s past and future. Amidst the greed and the selfishness, Sarman meets Chaani, the daughter of the high priest, predicted to be the Origin of a New Society and it is believed that her choices will redeem the woes of Mohenjo Daro.

Sarman, in his attempt to win Chaani’s love, uncovers the secrets nobody was ever supposed to know - about Chaani, about Mohenjo Daro and about his own past! Both lovers, along with the suppressed people, fight the evil forces of Maham and try to save their beloved city. But every great thing that rises must return to dust someday. That’s the law of nature. Thus, as Mohenjo Daro succumbs and pays for the greed of one man, Sarman leads his people to their future, towards better possibilities and towards the beginning of a new era.

Trivia

Ashutosh Gowariker was first inspired to make a film about the ancient Indus Valley civilization way back when he was in Bhuj, Gujarat, scouting locations for his then-upcoming film, Lagaan (2001).

The team stumbled across the massive excavations in progress at the ruins of Dholavira.

Mohenjo Daro was selected as the closing film of the 69th Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland.

During research, Ashutosh Gowariker worked with seven archaeologists led by Jonathan Mark Kenoyer from the University of Wisconsin, who were closely involved in the excavation of different sites and studying the Harappan Civilization.

The seal with 6 animal heads which was shown in the film recalls one of the earliest discovered artifacts from the initial archaeological excavations at the ruins of the ancient city itself.
